This qualitative study of portfolio use among ninth and tenth grade at-risk students revealed that students who were initially unclear about portfolio requirements and had few work samples in their portfolios, began to enter work samples into portfolios, as the study progressed. Student use of portfolios increased as students became more aware of the requirements to graduate with a portfolio despite the perceived difficulty in reaching the higher state standard. Relevant, high interest activities and quarterly exhibitions were used to encourage completion of work. As a result of this study, a new portfolio management system was recommended that would facilitate the use of portfolios.
